Most of the artists & entrepreneurs I consult with, who have been in the game a long time, are the ones having the most difficulty altering their methods, changing their style and adapting to the marketing strategies of the new techno world. That’s because they keep doing the same things they’ve always done, that have always worked, made many of them rich, and got them to where they are today.

Now they’re hope’n & pray’n that they still have that “o’l magic” to get them through these tough economic times. What they forgot is that it never was “magic” that got them where they are. It was their courage to take uncertain risks and make unproven decisions. It was their willingness to make personal sacrifices and work hard...really hard. And it was their ability to create something from nothing, with abandon, like they had nothing to lose.

Nevada Chamber Symphony in Concert

This is a small, elite orchestra, founded by Maestro Rodolfo Fernandez.

His professional career as a concert cellist and guest artist include national and international tours with the North Carolina Symphony, Louisiana Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, Bógota, and the Swiss Chamber Orchestra. His national debut as a concert cellist was held in Carnegie Recital Hall, New York, June 1972.

Sr. Fernandez is the founding member and leader of the Nevada String Quartet which presented a full season of classical music annually from 1975-1982. He later formed the Serenata Violancello Trio which toured statewide under the sponsorship of the Nevada Humanties Committee in 1983 and 1984.

He was appointed Ambassador of Culture of Las Vegas by Mayor Bill Briar and in 1989, the Nevada String Quartet expanded and changed their name to the Nevada Chamber Symphony. Rodolfo currently maintains the position of Conductor and Music Director.

Sr. Fernandez additionally designed and developed the NCS educational Outreach Programs "Ear-Openers," and "Night at the Symphony," interactive multi-discipline music education programs for elementary and high school students. He also designed and developed "Invitation to Play" a youth development program in cooperation with the Southern Nevada Music Teachers Association.

Alice Daena is a contemporary artist who paints watercolor on canvas.

She has been exhibiting in galleries in Arizona since 1962. She is a contemporary artist who has painted southwestern art and contemporary flower paintings. She has shown in places such as the 34th annual river road show, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; The International Art exhibit, Sea Cliff, New York; The Cordova historical museum, Cordova, Alaska; the 38th Annual Mother Lode National Arts Association, Placerville, California; the 9th Annual Rio Brazos Art Exhibition, Granbury, Texas; and three separate galleries in New York

Alice Daena was a winner of the 2008 Easter Seal Competition, a finalist in the Nova Town Society Art Search,  novatownsite.org, cover magazine competition, and has had her work displayed in Angels on Earth Magazine, published by Guidepost.

Her contemporary and southwestern art is the recipient of numerous awards and national recognition. She is considered a contemporary master by Amsterdam Whitney Fine Art, Inc., where she has shown for the last ten years.

Her work is in at least 150 private collections and she has shown in at least 100 galleries nationwide. Alice Daena has painted over 5000 paintings in the last 15 years. Her home and studio are just a few miles south of Sedona, Arizona.

What do people do when they go birding? Birdwatchers observe wild birds in their natural habitat. Birdwatching means learning to identify the birds and understand what they are doing. In North America, there are over 800 species of birds. Wherever you live, you'll probably find at least 100 species that are easy to find in your area. Life suddenly gets more interesting when you become aware of the varied bird life all around you. Where do you watch birds? Birding is something you can do in your own back yard (it's a natural habitat too). Your local park. Anywhere you travel. Or on trips you take specifically to see birds that live in a certain environment, such as on a native prairie in North Dakota, or in the old-growth forest of the Pacific Northwest.  

Who watches birds? People of all ages watch birds. It's an activity you can keep doing all your life, in any part of the world. Birding is the fastest-growing outdoor activity in America. According to a survey by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 51.3 million Americans report that they watch birds. And more are taking it up all the time.

Why birds? Birds have always delighted people all over the world because of their beauty and their power of flight. Historically, they used to be considered omens. The ancient Romans believed that the flights and calls of birds could foretell the future. Today, modern science still uses birds as a kind of oracle. Changes in bird populations can reflect the health of the environment. Some birds are indicator species, like the USA's national bird, the bald eagle. They forecast environmental conditions. The knowledge of birds can help us plan a better, more sustainable relationship with nature. What's in it for me if I start birding? Anything else? Yes. Birding is a quest. Dr. GARMAN HARBOTTLE possesses one the most original, intuitive and open minds we can find in the scientific world. Garman uses a technique known as carbon-dating to date and identify archeological artifacts and historical documents. After earning a Ph.D. in chemistry from Columbia University in 1949, Harbottle joined Brookhaven National Laboratory as an associate chemist in the same year. He has spent almost his entire career at Brookhaven, advancing to the position of senior chemist in 1968. He left Brookhaven briefly to become a Guggenheim Fellow at Cambridge University, England, 1957-58, and, in 1959, he taught radioisotope procedures at the American University in Beirut.

From 1965-67, Harbottle was director of the Division of Research and Laboratories, International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, Austria. In 1983, Harbottle was named a co-recipient, with Edward Sayre, of the George Hevesy Medal for outstanding achievement in radioanalytical chemistry. In 1995, Harbottle won the Seaborg Medal, one of the most prestigious awards given by the American Nuclear Society. Harbottle retired from the Brookhaven Lab in 1997, but he continues to make significant contributions to his field as a research collaborator at the Laboratory. “It’s exciting to follow my interests in nuclear chemistry and in archaeology and art history, and it’s particularly rewarding to solve archeological puzzles using scientific methods. Brookhaven has been a wonderful place to pursue interdisciplinary research.”

"It's a reedy, pleasant sound, a little thin, like a recorder," said Garman Harbottle, a nuclear scientist who specializes in radiocarbon dating at Brookhaven National Laboratory.... The flute was one of several instruments to be uncovered in Jiahu, a excavation site of Stone Age artifacts in China's Yellow River Valley....Harbottle says the seven notes on the 9,000 year-old instrument comprise a nearly accurate octave. "The flutes were just icing on the cake."
